4 young school girls

A rich curriculum preparing the Year 6 girls for transition

15th June 2015

The Year 6 girls are experiencing different ways of working on open-ended tasks to prepare them for the next stage of their school life.
In English they have worked in small groups to write the end of a story set in Holland many years ago, when superstitious villagers thought a lonely old lady could be a witch. They planned the story using diagrams and bullet points, used their writer’s workshop materials to explore exciting vocabulary and learned to negotiate, compromise and ensure each member of the group was valued. Their work was then performed to the rest of the class.

‘The advantage of working in a group is mainly that there are so many different ideas and therefore the story became more interesting’.
Tilly

‘Performing the story gives the audience a visual aid about what is happening’.
Poppy

‘None of us would have arrived at this story on our own’.
 Zara

‘Sometimes we argued about whose idea was the best but we learned to compromise’.
