History of the School
Bowdon Preparatory School for Girls was opened in 1983 by Mrs Tan, who ran it as a proprietorial school until 2011. During that time, the school operated from premises in Stamford Road, Bowdon, where it built a strong local reputation for offering a traditional-style education within a close-knit family environment. Pupil numbers grew steadily and the school rapidly became very highly regarded in the local area for its pastoral care and excellent results.
In 2011, Culcheth Hall School, a local school for girls aged 3–18 years, announced that it was closing. This created an opportunity to take over its very extensive premises, and a group of Bowdon Prep parents and former staff established a charitable trust in order to do this. At the same time, Mrs Tan transferred her school to the new charity and Bowdon Prep moved into the new site in Ashley Road, Altrincham, in September 2011. This gave it considerably more space, better facilities and a sports field.
Since the move, Bowdon Prep has consolidated its position as the leading local girls’ preparatory school, and it has made very good use of the larger premises.
Mrs Tan was therefore responsible for the school through its first 30 years, through its transfer into a charity and – very successfully – into the larger site, before her retirement in the summer of 2013.
The governors appointed Mrs Helen Gee as Headmistress in 2013. She has a strong regard for the school’s ethos and the traditional teaching techniques, while nurturing the belief that every child is an individual; the school continues to put the individual child at the heart of everything it does.
Today, the school has around 330 pupils and continues to celebrate outstanding entrance exam success for both grammar and selective schools, along with a set of impressive SATs results that are well above the national average.
Former pupil Nancy Osbaldeston played one of the ugly sisters in the English National Ballet production Cinderella at the Palace Theatre, Manchester, in April 2010.
Nancy – Congratulations and best wishes for your future from everyone at Bowdon Prep.
