Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1, the girls will continue to develop their learning skills and follow a much broader curriculum.
In Year 1, the teachers follow the National Curriculum as a basis for their teaching, but extend this beyond the expectations for Infant pupils. The curriculum includes mathematics and English, art, design and technology, history, geography, information and communication technology (ICT), French, music, religious education, PE, and personal, social and health education (PHSE).
The girls spend the majority of their day with their class teacher who teaches the core subjects and the majority of foundation subjects. Subject specialist teachers take lessons such as art, music, ICT and PE using the fantastic facilities that we have on offer. Year 1 classes have a full-time teaching assistant, which allows us to work closely with the pupils and differentiate the learning according to their needs, whether they require further consolidation or extension of skills being learnt in the classroom.
In Year 1, high expectations are important, both inside and outside the classroom, and we set great store by the development of good manners, self-discipline and consideration for others. The girls are encouraged to take more responsibility for personal organisation and to look after their own belongings.
Prior to going into Year 1, girls have a ‘moving-up’ session towards the end of the summer term, when they spend part of a day having an introduction to Year 1 life with their new teacher and in their class groups. A welcome meeting for parents of girls in Year 1 is held at the start of the autumn term. This provides an opportunity to meet the teachers and teaching assistants, as well as to give an insight into what to expect from the year ahead.
