Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

In Year 2, the children follow a rich, broad and stimulating curriculum, and they are encouraged to work hard and develop effective learning skills.

Year 2 pupils enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum that provides a significant enrichment of the National Curriculum. We aim to develop both core skills and enquiring minds, so that girls are prepared for the introduction of the increasingly academic curriculum of Year 3.

Numeracy, reading, literacy, and writing remain the core of the curriculum. Cursive writing becomes the norm, with girls joining words and writing fluently in sentences.  Each class teacher is supported by a teaching assistant, and this allows us to work closely with the girls and differentiate the learning according to their needs, whether they require further consolidation or extension of skills being learnt in the classroom. The girls are taught by specialist teachers in some subjects, such as art, design and technology, information and communication technology (ICT), science, PE and music.

High expectations are important both inside and outside the classroom, and we set great store by the development of good manners, self-discipline and consideration for others. The girls are encouraged to take more responsibility for personal organisation and to look after their own belongings.

Prior to going into Year 2, girls have a ‘moving-up’ session towards the end of the summer term, when they spend part of a day having an introduction to Year 2 life with their new teachers and in their class groups. A presentation is held at the start of the autumn term to give parents of Year 2 pupils an idea of what changes to expect as the girls move forward. This provides an opportunity to meet the teachers, as well as to give an insight into what to expect in Year 2.
