Senior School Transition

At Bowdon Preparatory School, we understand that a successful transition to senior school depends as much on emotional wellbeing as it does on academic preparation.

In Year 6, pupils take on a variety of leadership roles that foster independence and build essential life skills — including public speaking, teamwork, creative thinking and self-belief.

We ensure that every pupil is thoroughly prepared for grammar and independent school entrance examinations, while keeping the journey enjoyable and rewarding. Formal entrance exam preparation begins in Year 3, giving each child the time, confidence and support needed to achieve their goals when the time comes to sit entrance examinations for their chosen schools.

Parents are supported at every stage through clear communication and personalised guidance. Former pupils return to speak at information evenings in Years 5 and 6, offering first-hand insights into a wide range of senior schools. Alongside this, termly review meetings ensure that parents, teachers and pupils work closely in partnership — helping every child reach their full potential and make a happy, confident transition to the next stage of their education.

“Pupils are highly successful at gaining entry to their chosen senior schools. The vast majority secure places at state grammar schools or highly selective independent schools, a number with awards for academic success.” ISI report Nov 2022
“My daughter has embraced every part of BPS life – her studies, friends, music, drama, sports, school trips. It’s brilliant how she can get involved in so much from orienteering to brass instrument playing. I’m so proud of her and my main wish now is all this great input gets her to the school that I know is right for her.” Parent Year 5
